Establishment of Grand Canyon National Park

1919

Grand Canyon National Park protects the central part of the Grand Canyon in northern Arizona, a gorge cut by the Colorado River through layers of rock that record around two billion years of geological history. The canyon had been set aside earlier as a forest reserve and a national monument, partly through the support of President Theodore Roosevelt, before Congress made it a national park in the late 1910s. It was then one of the most visited parks in the country, and was later joined by Grand Canyon National Monument and enlarged several times. The park was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979.
