Founding of Bank of Estonia

1919

Eesti Pank, the Bank of Estonia, is the central bank of Estonia and part of the Eurosystem since the country adopted the euro in 2011. It was founded shortly after the country declared its independence in 1918, and it issued the Estonian mark and then, from 1928, the kroon. Its operations ended with the Soviet occupation in 1940. The bank was re-established as Estonia moved toward independence in 1989 and 1990, and in June 1992 the kroon was reintroduced, pegged to the German mark. This currency board arrangement gave Estonia a stable currency in the years of transition and helped it become one of the first former Soviet republics to join the European Union and the euro area.
