Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic

from 25 October 1917 to 25 December 1991

The Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic emerged from the Bolshevik seizure of power in Petrograd during the October Revolution of 1917 and became the core of the Soviet state. In 1922 it joined Ukraine, Belarus and the Transcaucasian republic to form the Soviet Union, within which it was by far the largest and most populous republic, with Moscow as the capital of both. Its vast territory included many autonomous republics and regions for non-Russian peoples, while real power lay with the Communist Party. In the late 1980s it asserted its sovereignty under Boris Yeltsin, and after the Soviet Union dissolved in December 1991 it continued as the Russian Federation.
