The Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic was a constituent republic of the Soviet Union, established after the Red Army entered Baku and ended the independent Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. From 1922 to 1936 it was part of the Transcaucasian republic, and then became a full Soviet republic. Baku's oil industry was central to the Soviet economy, particularly during the Second World War. The republic included the autonomous region of Nagorno-Karabakh and the Nakhchivan autonomous republic, and tensions over Karabakh grew in the late 1980s. The Soviet army's crackdown in Baku in January 1990 strengthened the independence movement, and Azerbaijan declared its independence as the Soviet Union dissolved.
