Baku State University is the oldest and one of the largest universities in Azerbaijan. It was founded in the capital by the government of the first Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, which existed only briefly before the Soviet takeover in 1920. Its first faculties covered fields such as history and philology, physics and mathematics, law and medicine, and over time specialized institutions, such as the medical university, were separated from it. The university trained generations of Azerbaijani scientists, teachers and public figures and became a center of research in the humanities and sciences. Today it has numerous faculties and thousands of students.
