The interwar period was the time between the end of the First World War and the beginning of the Second World War in Europe. It began with the armistice and the peace settlements, including the Treaty of Versailles, and the creation of the League of Nations, which was intended to prevent another war. The 1920s saw reconstruction, cultural change and a period of prosperity in many countries, but the Great Depression, which began in 1929, caused severe unemployment and social unrest. Fascist and authoritarian regimes came to power in Italy, Germany and other countries, while the Soviet Union consolidated under Stalin. Rising aggression, the failure of collective security and the policy of appeasement ended in the outbreak of war in 1939.
