Rise of K-pop

1990

K-pop is the popular music of South Korea, a genre that combines pop, hip hop, R&B and electronic styles with polished choreography and music videos. The date shown is approximate, since many historians trace its modern form to the group Seo Taiji and Boys, who debuted in 1992 and brought hip hop and Western pop influences into Korean music. In the mid-1990s agencies such as SM Entertainment began to train young performers for years in singing, dancing and languages, creating the idol system and groups like H.O.T. The Korean Wave spread through Asia and then the world, boosted by social media, with Psy's Gangnam Style in 2012 and later by groups such as BTS and Blackpink.
