After the attacks of 11 September 2001, a United States-led coalition invaded Afghanistan to destroy al-Qaeda and remove the Taliban government that had sheltered it. The Taliban fell within weeks, and a new government under Hamid Karzai was formed with international backing, while a NATO-led force helped secure the country. The Taliban regrouped in the south and east and waged a long insurgency that cost tens of thousands of Afghan lives. After an agreement with the United States signed in Doha in 2020, foreign troops withdrew, and the Taliban entered Kabul in August 2021 as the last American forces left.
