Founding of European Parliament

1952

The European Parliament has its origins in the Common Assembly of the European Coal and Steel Community, which held its first session in Strasbourg and was composed of delegates appointed by the national parliaments of six member states. It took the name European Parliament in 1962, and its members were first elected directly by citizens in 1979. Over the decades successive treaties, including Maastricht and Lisbon, gave it real power over legislation, the budget and the appointment of the European Commission, which it can also dismiss. It sits in Strasbourg and Brussels, with administrative offices in Luxembourg, and it has more than seven hundred members. It is the only directly elected institution of the European Union.
