Founding of Union of European Football Associations

15 June 1954

The Union of European Football Associations was founded in Basel, Switzerland, by representatives of national associations who wanted a European body to organise competitions and represent the continent's interests within FIFA. The Dane Ebbe Schwartz became its first president. UEFA launched the European Cup in 1955-56, won by Real Madrid, and this tournament was reorganised in 1992 as the Champions League. It also created the European Championship, whose first edition was played in 1960. Its headquarters have been in Nyon, Switzerland, since 1995. Today UEFA has more than fifty member associations and runs club and national-team competitions that are among the most-watched sporting events in the world.
