The 2012 United States presidential election was won by the incumbent Democrat, Barack Obama, who defeated the Republican challenger, Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts. Obama and his running mate, Vice President Joe Biden, won a clear majority of electoral votes, though the popular vote was closer. The campaign focused on the slow recovery from the 2008 financial crisis, unemployment, the Affordable Care Act and taxation, and was the most expensive in American history to that point. Hurricane Sandy struck the East Coast in the last days of the campaign. Obama became the first Democrat since Franklin Roosevelt to win a majority of the popular vote in two elections.
