2012 Gaza War

from 14 November 2012 to 21 November 2012

The 2012 Gaza War, which Israel called Operation Pillar of Defense, was an eight-day military confrontation between Israel and armed groups in the Gaza Strip, mainly Hamas. It began when Israel killed Ahmed Jabari, the head of Hamas's military wing, in an air strike, after a period of rocket fire from Gaza and clashes along the border. Militants fired large numbers of rockets at Israeli towns, some reaching as far as the Tel Aviv area and Jerusalem, and the Iron Dome air defense system intercepted many of them. Israel carried out air strikes on Gaza, and civilians died on both sides. A ceasefire was brokered by Egypt, under President Mohamed Morsi, with the involvement of the United States, but it did not resolve the underlying conflict.
