Release of Wikidata

29 October 2012

Wikidata is a free, multilingual knowledge base that anyone can edit, launched on 29 October 2012 by Wikimedia Deutschland as a project of the Wikimedia Foundation. It was designed by Denny Vrandecic and Markus Krotzsch to store structured data, such as dates, places and identifiers, in a form that machines can read. It first served as a central store for the links between different language editions of Wikipedia, and later became the source for facts used in Wikipedia infoboxes, maps and other services. Each item has a unique identifier, beginning with the letter Q, and statements that can be backed by references. Its data are released under a public domain license, and it is widely used by search engines and researchers.
