Creation of Windows 8

26 October 2012

Windows 8 is a version of Microsoft's Windows operating system, released to the public on 26 October 2012. It was a major redesign aimed at the growing market for touchscreen tablets as well as traditional desktop computers. The most visible change was a Start screen made of live tiles that replaced the Start menu, together with apps from a new Windows Store. Many users of keyboards and mice found the interface confusing, and sales fell short of expectations. Microsoft responded with Windows 8.1 in 2013, which brought back a Start button, and then released Windows 10 in 2015, which restored the Start menu. The release is often cited as an example of a company changing a familiar interface too sharply.
