Hurricane Sandy

from 22 October 2012 to 2 November 2012

Hurricane Sandy was a large and destructive Atlantic hurricane that formed in the Caribbean in late October 2012. It crossed Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas as a major hurricane, causing deaths and damage, and then turned north along the American coast. It came ashore near the coast of New Jersey as a post-tropical cyclone, but with winds covering a huge area, and its storm surge flooded much of the lower part of New York City, including subway tunnels, and left millions of people without electricity. More than two hundred people died across the countries it affected, and the damage in the United States was tens of billions of dollars. It led to new flood defences and plans for coastal resilience.
