Mongolian People's Republic

from 26 November 1924 to 12 February 1992

The Mongolian People's Republic was a communist state in East Asia, proclaimed after the death of the Bogd Khan, the last theocratic ruler of Mongolia. Closely allied with the Soviet Union, it was the second communist state in the world. Under leaders such as Khorloogiin Choibalsan and later Yumjaagiin Tsedenbal, it collectivized herding, expanded education and industry, and followed Moscow's lead. In the late 1930s, thousands of people, including many Buddhist monks, were killed in political purges and most monasteries were destroyed. Independence was formally recognized by China after the Second World War. After peaceful democratic protests in 1990, the one-party system ended, and a new constitution in 1992 changed the state's name to Mongolia.
