Jimmy Carter was born on 1 October 1924 in Lillian G. Carter Nursing Center. An American Democratic politician from Georgia, Carter was a naval officer and peanut farmer before becoming governor and then, in 1976, the 39th president. His term saw the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel, the Panama Canal treaties and the normalisation of relations with China. It was also marked by high inflation and energy shortages and by the Iran hostage crisis, and he lost the 1980 election to Ronald Reagan. After leaving office he founded the Carter Center, which promoted peace, monitored elections and fought disease, and he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002. He lived to the age of one hundred, the longest of any president.
