Founding of AS Monaco FC

23 August 1924

AS Monaco FC is a football club representing the Principality of Monaco, although it plays in the French league system, and was formed in the 1920s by merging several local clubs under the patronage of the Grimaldi princely family. It has won the French league title eight times, including in 2017, when a young team including Kylian Mbappe and Bernardo Silva also reached the semi-finals of the Champions League. In 2004, it reached the Champions League final, losing to Porto. The club plays at the Stade Louis II. It is known for developing young players who are later sold to bigger clubs, and for its red and white colours, which reflect the colours of the principality's flag.
