Construction of Alexander Nevsky Cathedral

12 September 1924

The Alexander Nevsky Cathedral in Sofia is a Bulgarian Orthodox cathedral, one of the largest Eastern Orthodox churches in the world and a symbol of the Bulgarian capital. It was built to honour the Russian soldiers who died in the Russo-Turkish War, which ended almost five centuries of Ottoman rule in Bulgaria, and it is named for the medieval Russian prince and saint Alexander Nevsky. The neo-Byzantine design is by the Russian architect Alexander Pomerantsev, and the building has gilded domes and a richly decorated interior with mosaics and frescoes. The cathedral took decades to complete, from the foundation stone to its consecration. It serves as the seat of the Bulgarian Patriarch for major religious ceremonies.
