Second Intifada

from 28 September 2000 to 8 February 2005

The Second Intifada was a period of intense Palestinian-Israeli violence that followed the failure of the Camp David talks in 2000 and a visit by Ariel Sharon to the Temple Mount, also known as the Haram al-Sharif, in Jerusalem. Protests turned into an armed uprising, with suicide bombings against Israeli civilians and large-scale Israeli military operations in the West Bank and Gaza, such as Operation Defensive Shield in 2002. Thousands of people died, most of them Palestinians but also many Israelis. Israel built a barrier in the West Bank, and in 2005 withdrew from Gaza. The Sharm el-Sheikh summit of that year is usually seen as marking its end.
