Launch of Discogs

October 2000

Discogs is an online database and marketplace for information about music recordings, particularly vinyl records, compact discs and other physical formats. It was started by Kevin Lewandowski, a programmer and record collector, as a place to catalogue electronic music releases, and it gradually expanded to all genres. Its data is contributed and edited by volunteers, who add details such as track lists, credits, label information, pressings and catalogue numbers. A marketplace was added in the mid-2000s so that users could buy and sell records, and it became one of the largest such markets. The database has become an essential reference for collectors, DJs and researchers of music history.
