Discovery of Tarvos

23 September 2000

Tarvos is an irregular moon of Saturn, around fifteen kilometers across, discovered in 2000 by a team led by Brett Gladman. It belongs to the Gallic group, a family of moons that orbit Saturn at a great distance in the same direction as the planet's spin, along with Albiorix and Erriapus. Its name comes from Tarvos Trigaranus, a Gallic god in the form of a bull with three cranes. It is thought to have been captured by Saturn, perhaps as a fragment of a larger body that broke up.
