2000 United States presidential election

7 November 2000

The 2000 United States presidential election was one of the closest in American history, between the Republican governor of Texas, George W. Bush, and the Democratic vice president, Al Gore. Gore won the national popular vote by a small margin, but the outcome in the Electoral College depended on Florida, where Bush's lead was reduced to a few hundred votes, which led to a recount. Disputes over ballots in several counties, such as the hanging chads, led to litigation, and in the case of Bush v. Gore the Supreme Court stopped the recount in December. Bush was declared the winner of Florida and thereby of the presidency, with 271 electoral votes to 266.
