Creation of Knoppix

30 September 2000

Knoppix is a Linux distribution created by the German consultant Klaus Knopper and based on Debian. It became famous as one of the first widely used live CD systems, able to start from a CD or later a USB drive and run entirely from memory without installing anything on the hard disk. It included automatic hardware detection and a large selection of software, so that a user could try Linux on almost any computer. Many people used it as a rescue disc to repair or recover data from a failed system. Knoppix inspired a series of other live distributions and helped to popularize the idea of trying Linux without installing it.
