Origins of Czech First League

1993

The Czech First League is the top level of football in the Czech Republic, which was founded as an independent competition in 1993 after Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia at the start of that year. It replaced the Czechoslovak First League, which had existed since the 1920s and in which Prague clubs Sparta and Slavia had been the dominant sides. Sparta Prague won most of the early titles, and since then Slavia Prague and Viktoria Plzeň have also won the championship several times. The league has sixteen teams, and its leading clubs take part in European competitions. It is known for producing players who go on to play in the major leagues of Western Europe.
