Discovery of Altamura Man

1993

The Altamura Man is the remarkably well-preserved skeleton of a Neanderthal, found in the Lamalunga cave near the town of Altamura, in Apulia in southern Italy. It was spotted by cave explorers, lying on the floor of a deep chamber, and has been covered over time by calcite deposits that formed a hard crust over the bones, so it has not been removed from the cave. Dating of the crust shows that the man lived roughly 130,000 to 170,000 years ago, and some DNA has been recovered, making it one of the oldest Neanderthal remains from which genetic material has been analyzed. The skeleton may have belonged to a person who fell into a sinkhole and died.
