Origins of Czech Extraliga

1993

The Czech Extraliga is the top ice hockey league in the Czech Republic, which began after the split of Czechoslovakia led to the creation of separate Czech and Slovak competitions. It succeeded the Czechoslovak league, which had a long tradition and had produced many strong teams. Clubs such as HC Sparta Praha, HC Slavia Praha, HC Pardubice, Kometa Brno and Bílí Tygři Liberec have won the title. Ice hockey is one of the most popular sports in the country, which has a strong national team, winning gold at the 1998 Winter Olympics in Nagano and several World Championship titles. Many Czech players have gone on to play in the National Hockey League.
