Founding of National Bank of Slovakia

1993

The National Bank of Slovakia is the central bank of the Slovak Republic, based in Bratislava. It was created when Czechoslovakia was dissolved at the end of 1992, taking over the monetary functions that had been shared with the Czech lands, and the Slovak koruna was introduced as the national currency. Over the following years the bank was responsible for keeping inflation low, supervising banks and preparing the country for European integration. Slovakia joined the European Union in 2004 and adopted the euro in 2009, and since then the National Bank has been part of the Eurosystem, taking part in the decisions of the European Central Bank while continuing to supervise the financial sector at home.
