Founding of TV Azteca

1993

TV Azteca is a Mexican television and media company, which emerged when the government privatised its state-owned channels and sold them to a group headed by the businessman Ricardo Salinas Pliego. It was set up to compete with Televisa, which had had a near monopoly on Mexican television, and it built its audience with telenovelas, football, and news programmes that offered an alternative to Televisa. The company runs national networks, including Azteca 7 and Azteca 13, and has been active in the United States through Azteca America. Its owner has been involved in many public disputes, including long-running tax disputes with the Mexican authorities.
