Creation of Lua

1993

Lua is a lightweight, fast programming language created in 1993 at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil by Roberto Ierusalimschy, Luiz Henrique de Figueiredo and Waldemar Celes. It grew out of two earlier in-house data-description languages built for a research group working with the oil company Petrobras. The name means moon in Portuguese. Lua is designed to be embedded in larger programs written in C, giving them a simple scripting layer, and it has a small footprint and a clean syntax built around a flexible data structure called the table. It became widely used for scripting in video games, including World of Warcraft, and in applications such as Adobe Lightroom, and Roblox uses a dialect of it.
