The Indo-Pakistani War of 1965 was fought over the disputed region of Kashmir. It began after Pakistan sent infiltrators across the ceasefire line in an attempt to provoke an uprising, in what was called Operation Gibraltar, and India responded by sending its army across the international border toward Lahore and Sialkot. The war saw large tank battles, such as the one at Asal Uttar, and air combat, but neither side gained a decisive advantage. A ceasefire was agreed in late September under United Nations pressure. The Tashkent Declaration, mediated by the Soviet Union in January 1966, returned both sides to their earlier positions.
