Introduction of Ghana cedi

19 July 1965

The Ghana cedi is the currency of Ghana, introduced on 19 July 1965, a few years after independence, to replace the Ghanaian pound. The move was made under President Kwame Nkrumah as part of the country's efforts to assert its economic sovereignty with a decimal currency. The name comes from the word for cowrie shell in the Akan language, as cowries had long been used as money in West Africa. High inflation in the following decades eroded the value of the original cedi, and in 2007 the country introduced the Ghana cedi, a redenominated currency worth ten thousand old cedis. The cedi is divided into 100 pesewas.
