J. K. Rowling was born on 31 July 1965 in Yate. A British author, Rowling is the creator of the Harry Potter series, seven novels about a young wizard that began with Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone in 1997. The idea came to her on a train journey in 1990, and she wrote the first book while living in Edinburgh as a single mother. The series became a global publishing phenomenon, was translated into dozens of languages and inspired a hugely successful film franchise, theme parks and a stage play. She has also written adult novels, including The Casual Vacancy, and crime fiction under the pen name Robert Galbraith. She has donated large sums to charity, and her public statements on gender issues have drawn considerable controversy.
