Rise of People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran

5 September 1965

The People's Mojahedin Organization of Iran, or Mojahedin-e Khalq, was founded by a group of Iranian students who combined Islamic ideas with Marxist-influenced revolutionary politics, and who opposed the rule of the Shah. It fought an armed campaign against the monarchy in the 1970s, and then broke with the clerical leaders of the Islamic Republic after the 1979 revolution, launching attacks against the new government, which responded with severe repression and mass executions. Under the leadership of Massoud Rajavi, the group moved to France and then to Iraq, where it was supported by Saddam Hussein. It has a political wing, the National Council of Resistance of Iran. It remains highly controversial, and has been described in different ways by governments.
