The Socialist Republic of Romania was the official name of the country under communist rule after a new constitution was adopted, a few months after Nicolae Ceausescu became leader of the Communist Party. At first Ceausescu seemed to offer a more independent line, refusing to take part in the 1968 invasion of Czechoslovakia and keeping ties with the West, which brought him praise abroad. Over time his regime became increasingly repressive and personalised, with a pervasive secret police, the Securitate, and an ambitious programme of industrialisation and urban demolition. In the 1980s severe austerity, aimed at paying off foreign debt, caused hardship. The regime was overthrown in the Romanian Revolution of December 1989, and Ceausescu was executed.
