Founding of The Temple Institute

1987

The Temple Institute is an Israeli organisation based in the Old City of Jerusalem, founded in 1987 by Rabbi Yisrael Ariel. Its stated goal is to promote the rebuilding of a Third Temple on the Temple Mount, and it researches the Temple service described in Jewish tradition. It has produced replicas of ritual objects, such as the menorah, priestly garments and sacrificial vessels, and displays them in an exhibition in the Jewish Quarter. It also runs educational programmes. The idea of rebuilding is controversial, because the Temple Mount is the site of the Dome of the Rock and Al-Aqsa Mosque, which are sacred to Muslims, and many Jews also oppose such plans on religious grounds.
