Publication of Animal Farm

17 August 1945

Animal Farm is a short satirical novel by George Orwell, published after several publishers had hesitated to accept it because of its criticism of the Soviet Union, a wartime ally of Britain. The story tells of farm animals who overthrow their human farmer and set up a society of equals, only for the pigs, led by Napoleon, to take control and become as tyrannical as the humans they replaced. The tale is an allegory of the Russian Revolution and the rise of Stalinism, with characters representing historical figures. Its clear style and sharp message made it a worldwide success, and it remains a standard text on corruption of power and political propaganda.
