Rise of Lord's Resistance Army

1987

The Lord's Resistance Army is a rebel group that arose in northern Uganda under Joseph Kony, drawing on the earlier Holy Spirit Movement of Alice Lakwena among the Acholi people. It fought the government of Yoweri Museveni with a blend of religious language, claimed spiritual authority and appeals to Acholi grievances, though it lost much local support through its brutality. The group became notorious for abducting thousands of children, who were forced to serve as fighters, porters and sex slaves, and for massacres of civilians. In 2005 the International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Kony and several commanders. After failed peace talks, the group moved into the Democratic Republic of the Congo, South Sudan and the Central African Republic, and it was greatly weakened though Kony was never captured.
