Creation of Perl

1987

Perl is an interpreted programming language created by Larry Wall, who released its first version in 1987 while working as a systems programmer. It was designed as a practical tool for text processing and report generation, combining features of C, shell scripting, awk and sed. Perl's strength in pattern matching with regular expressions made it popular for system administration. In the 1990s it became widely used for writing CGI scripts that powered early dynamic websites, and it earned the nickname of the duct tape of the internet. The community's motto is that there is more than one way to do it. A major redesign led to a separate language, now called Raku, while Perl 5 continues to be developed.
