Founding of Huawei

1987

Huawei is a Chinese technology company based in Shenzhen, founded by Ren Zhengfei, a former engineer in the People's Liberation Army. It began as a small business selling telephone switching equipment and then moved into producing its own, with success in the Chinese market in the 1990s. The company later expanded abroad and became one of the largest makers of telecommunications equipment, as well as a major producer of smartphones. Huawei has also been at the centre of political controversy, as the United States and several other governments have restricted its equipment over concerns about security and links to the Chinese state, claims the company denies. Sanctions have affected its access to advanced chips and its smartphone business.
