The Beatles

from 1960 to 1970

The Beatles were an English rock band formed in Liverpool, and the date marks the end of their career as a group, when Paul McCartney announced that he was leaving. The lineup that became world famous consisted of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, who replaced the earlier drummer Pete Best in 1962. After a long apprenticeship in Hamburg and at the Cavern Club, they signed with the manager Brian Epstein and the producer George Martin, and their success from 1963 set off Beatlemania. Their appearance on American television in 1964 launched the British Invasion of the US charts. Their later albums, such as Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band and Abbey Road, extended the possibilities of popular music, and they are widely regarded as the most influential and best-selling band in history.
