Publication of Garfield

1978

Garfield is a comic strip created by the American cartoonist Jim Davis, featuring a lazy, sarcastic orange tabby cat who loves lasagna and hates Mondays. He lives with his hapless owner Jon Arbuckle and the dim-witted dog Odie. Davis, who had grown up on a farm in Indiana with many cats, launched the strip in a limited number of newspapers and it spread rapidly across the United States. It has been recognised as one of the most widely syndicated comic strips in the world and has appeared in books, television specials, an animated series and films. Merchandise featuring the character became hugely successful.
