Founding of SpaceX

14 March 2002

SpaceX, formally Space Exploration Technologies Corporation, was founded by Elon Musk in 2002 with the aim of lowering the cost of spaceflight. After several failures, its Falcon 1 rocket became the first privately developed liquid-fueled rocket to reach orbit in 2008. The Falcon 9 followed, and in 2012 its Dragon capsule became the first commercial spacecraft to dock with the International Space Station. In 2015 the company landed a Falcon 9 first stage after launch for the first time, and it later made reusable boosters routine. SpaceX has carried astronauts for NASA since 2020 and is developing the large Starship vehicle.
