Launch of last.fm

20 March 2002

Last.fm is a music website and service that builds a profile of each listener's tastes through a process called scrobbling, in which the songs a person plays on their devices and in other services are recorded. It was founded in London by Felix Miller, Martin Stiksel, Michael Breidenbruch and Thomas Willomitzer as an internet radio station, and in 2005 it merged with Audioscrobbler, a system created by Richard Jones. Last.fm uses the data to recommend music and to show charts and statistics. It was bought by CBS in 2007, and, although its radio and streaming functions were later reduced, its scrobbling service remains popular among music enthusiasts.
