Creation of Gentoo Linux

31 March 2002

Gentoo Linux is a Linux distribution known for being built from source code on the user's own machine, tuned to its hardware and the user's choices. It grew out of an earlier project begun by the developer Daniel Robbins, who released version 1.0 in the spring of 2002 under the Gentoo name, after the fast-swimming gentoo penguin. Its package manager, Portage, was inspired by the ports system of BSD operating systems and lets users switch features on or off through so-called USE flags. Because compiling everything takes time, Gentoo has attracted enthusiasts who want fine control over their system rather than convenience. The distribution has also influenced others, and Google's ChromeOS is built using Gentoo's tools.
