Release of Czech Wikipedia

3 May 2002

The Czech-language edition of Wikipedia is one of the many language editions of the free online encyclopedia run by the Wikimedia Foundation. It started in 2002, in the early years of the project, and is among the older non-English editions. Czech is a West Slavic language spoken by about ten million people, mostly in the Czech Republic. Over time the edition grew to hundreds of thousands of articles, written and maintained by volunteer editors who set their own editorial policies within the broader Wikimedia framework. It covers both general topics and a great deal of local material on Czech history, geography and culture.
