The Finnish edition of Wikipedia was started in early 2002, when the project was still growing, and is written in Finnish, a language spoken by around five million people. The edition grew steadily to hundreds of thousands of articles, and is large in relation to the number of Finnish speakers. Its volunteer community works on topics ranging from Finnish history, nature and culture to science and technology. The edition has an active association behind it, Wikimedia Suomi, which organises events and projects with libraries, museums and universities in Finland. Because Finnish is not related to most European languages, translations from other editions require more adaptation.
