Release of Slovene Wikipedia

8 March 2002

The Slovene-language edition of Wikipedia was launched in March 2002, in the first phase of Wikipedia's spread beyond English. It is written by volunteers and hosted by the Wikimedia Foundation, and it serves readers in Slovenia and the Slovene minorities and diaspora in neighbouring countries and elsewhere. Slovenian is spoken by around two million people, which makes it a relatively small language, but the edition has grown into a substantial encyclopaedia. Its articles cover Slovenian history, culture, geography, and the sciences, and it is regarded as one of the more mature mid-sized editions.
