Founding of Human Rights Watch

1978

Human Rights Watch is an international non-governmental organisation that investigates and exposes human rights abuses around the world. Its origins lie in Helsinki Watch, set up to monitor whether the Soviet bloc complied with the human rights provisions of the Helsinki Accords. Robert Bernstein was a leading founder. Similar committees for the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East followed, and in 1988 they were brought together under the present name. Based in New York, it publishes reports and presses governments to change policy. It shared the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize as a founding member of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines.
