Founding of Donkervoort

1978

Donkervoort is a Dutch maker of lightweight sports cars, founded by Joop Donkervoort in 1978. The firm began by building a car based on the Lotus Seven, which Donkervoort had the rights to produce, and called it the S7. The company is based in Lelystad, and all of its cars are handbuilt in small numbers. Its models, including the D8 and later the D8 GTO, emphasize a very low weight, strong acceleration and a stripped-down design. The company has remained small and independent, selling to customers around the world.
